Rangers open season with win over Clarendon

The second stage of the Larry Brown Era got off to a rousing start on Thursday. The Rangers picked up double-digit performances from four different players and rolled to an easy 97-78 victory over Clarendon. The game was played in front of a small crowd in the Ron Butler Gymnasium on Jan. 21.

Clarendon, the defending Region V champion, got off to a quick start. They buried a couple of early three-point shots and raced to an early advantage.

Mark Mayle and Jorell Saterfield brought Ranger back. A sophomore from Malvern, OH., Mayle took a pass from Keisei Tominaga and powered his way in for a two-hand dunk midway through the first half. The dunk ignited a solid push that sent RC into the half with a 5-point lead, at 45-40.

Saterfield and Mayle combined to score 17 points in the first 20 minutes.

Trey Tennyson and Tominaga picked up the mantle for the Rangers in the second half. Tennyson pumped in 16 of his game-high 24 points and keyed a 52-38 second-half spree. Tominaga tallied 10 of his 15 points in the frame.

Overall, Tominaga buried three 3-point shots in the affair, leaving him just 23 long-range bombs from breaking the school's all-time mark for treys in a career. Former RC star Brayan Au holds the school's record for three-pointers made at 130.

Saterfield finished the game with 14 points. Mayle added 12.

Starlin Hamilton and Kenyuoe Ondaan also played well for RC, netting eight points apiece. Reece Efole' added six.

Ranger will return to action on Sunday when they host Odessa College. The game will begin at 2 p.m.
