Lady Rangers drop nailbiter to Midland
Midland College pieced together a 21-12 run in the final 10 minutes of play on Tuesday and eked out a tough 67-60 victory over the Ranger College women's basketball team in front of a small crowd in the Chaparral Center in Midland.
With the loss, the RC women dropped to 1-5 for the season.
Ranger, which shot just over 30 percent from the floor during the game, more than held its own against Midland College in the first half. After fighting their way to a 13-13 deadlock in the first 10 minutes of lay, the RC offense hit stride. The Lady Rangers pounded out a staggering 25-11 spree in the second quarter and rolled into the half with a 38-24 advantage.
Midland College recovered in the third. The Lady Chaps posted a 22-10 run in the frame and trailed by just two, at 48-46, at the start of the fourth.
Mariah Houston led all Ranger College scorers with 16 points. She also tied for the team's lead in rebounds with Jemima Yowa. Both tallied seven boards in the matchup.
Laniah Thornton also added to the RC offense. She buried three shots from behind the three-point arc and finished with nine points. Alani Owens and Ana Abans added eight points apiece.
Ranger will compete in the Blinn College Invitational on Dec. 6-7 in Brenham.
