Lady Rangers split games at Blinn tournament

The Ranger College Lady Rangers split their first two games at the Blinn College Invitational on Saturday. The tournament runs through this weekend.

The Lady Rangers, now 2-6 overall, went stone cold from the field in the second half of their showdown with Blinn College and dropped a 55-37 decision.

"We played good basketball for two quarters," said head coach Mark Morefield. "In the third quarter, we were cold shooting, and the fourth quarter woes plagued us."

The Lady Rangers held their own in the first half. Ranger scored 26 points in the first 20 minutes.

Unfortunately, the team scored just four points in the third and allowed Blinn to get out to a huge lead.

Aisha Martin led all RC scorers against Blinn with seven points. Mariah Houston and Paris Anderson added six apiece.

Ranger turned in one of its better outings of the season in their 75-47 win over Gulf Western on Saturday. The RC women shot 42 percent from the floor and pounded out a lead at the half. RC scored 20 points in each of the first two quarters of play. They padded their lead with a 21-point outburst in the third.

"The impressive thing is we came out at halftime and increased the lead," said Morefield. "As our young team continues to grow, we are getting more game reps that will pay dividends."

Houston led all RC scorers with 16 points. Jemima Yowa added 12 points and nine rebounds. Martin tallied 10.
